Having been educated at Queen's Park Secondary, William Kerr went on to study law at Glasgow University. His footballing career was cut short by the First World War, where he served with the 6th Battalion The Black Watch, being injured in France in 1918. His working life was spent in local government, where he became the Glasgow Town Clerk, and amongst his duties he was the Civil Defence Controller for Glasgow during the Second World War. In 1954 he was knighted, and was a few months from retirement before falling ill at the City Chambers in the afternoon of 21st August 1959, whereupon he was taken to the Royal Infirmary before dying later that night.
