Name: Thornton, Lionel Cuthbert (Major)
DoB:  1905, Singapore

DoD: 15/02/1942, Singapore

Nicknamed "Tinny", Lionel Thornton was an inside-left who made just one appearance for Queen's Park, scoring once against Third Lanark in a game that saw four goals in nine first half minutes. Thornton was a well known amateur footballer in England, having played for Derbyshire Amateurs, Kingstonians, The Corinthians and the Casuals, as well as playing regularly for the England Amateur side, touring Australia and New Zealand with them. Thornton was also a noted cricketer, captaining the Oxford University side. A director of a printing firm in Derby, it has to be assumed that his war service with the Sherwood Foresters brought him to the west of Scotland. He was caught up in the capitulation of Singapore and was reported as killed in action on the last day of fighting, 15th February 1942.
